Education

I earned a Ph.D. in English with distinction from the University of Notre Dame in 2009. My areas of concentration were 18th-Century British Literature and Irish Language (Gaelic) and Literature. While I was at UND, I even taught an undergraduate class on Traditional Irish Music. I earned an M.A. in Folklore from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in1989. focusing on traditional Irish and American song and folk narrative. I earned my B.A. in English and French at Washington University, and was included on the Dean's List. I spent my junior year at the University of Sussex, in England, where I took classes not only in English and French, but also Psychology and Intellectual History.

Experience

I have taught at the University of Notre Dame, Drury University, and Missouri State University. My subjects included first-year writing, composition, British and American literature, and the history of the English language. As a guest lecturer at MSU, I have taught classes in creative non-fiction and folklore. I have also substitute taught extensively, especially on the high school level, in a variety of subject areas, including English, French, choral singing, and music. I have tutored at both the college and the middle/high school levels in reading, literature, writing, and vocabulary. I also worked as an essay tutor for two years for the on-line company Smarthinking. My publications include one academic book, scholarly essays, poetry, creative non-fiction, and feature stories in arts magazines and specialty publications. Music lessons: I have taught both children and adults the following: beginning to intermediate violin/fiddle (classical, Irish, and American); intermediate classical guitar and fingerstyle Irish guitar; traditional Irish singing; and clawhammer banjo. I have two books on fingerstyle guitar with Mel Bay Publications and have recorded one CD, "American Stranger," for the Waterbug label. I want to be a tutor because I love teaching!

Hobbies

I am a professional folk/traditional musician, although a broken femur has curtailed my touring at least for the time being. However, I have continued to perform, both locally and nationally--and I love to play for dances and at jam sessions. Before I broke my leg, I also used to enjoy bicycling and hiking. I love watching movies and documentaries. Besides literature, I enjoy reading books about history, religion, and psychology, as well as mystery and spy novels.
